How old was I when ...
I have a friend who likes to pick on my young age - he’s all of ten years older, so likes to mock me for being young, y’see.

So, for no reason that I can think of, other than to give him more fodder to mock me with, I started calculating how old I was when some of my favourite music came out.

  • Rumours, Fleetwood Mac - 9
  • Band on the Run, Wings - 5
  • Who’s Next?, The Who - 3
  • Exile On Main Street, Rolling Stones - 4
  • Volcano, Jimmy Buffet - 11
  • In Through The Out Door, Led Zeppelin - 11
  • Space Oddity, David Bowie - 1
  • Hunky Dory, David Bowie - 3
  • Atom Heart Mother, Pink Floyd - 2
  • Meddle, Pink Floyd - 3
  • Frampton Comes Alive!, Peter Frampton - 8
  • Bad Habits, The Monks - 11
  • Sandinista, The Clash - 12

Flick my Bic? Stick it, I've got a Cricket.
As of last Friday I have been a non-smoker for six years. It’s been so long that I don’t even think about it anymore. I just happened to remember the Quit Smoking Calculator, which calculates how much money you’ve saved since quitting, and wanted to give it a spin. Using the base price of $9 per pack, at 25 cigarettes a day, I got the following results: You’ve been free of cigarettes for 2197 days, 22 hours, 0 minutes & 56 seconds

You have not smoked 54,947 cigarettes since then, and you have saved a total of $24,726.58.

That’s a yearly wage I have not spent on cigarettes (which probably instead went to tea, take-out pizza, and new bras).

Top 10 Most Sinister PSYOPS Mission Patches

“Mission patches are used by military and space organizations to identify, symbolize and describe a mission’s objectives and its crew. This tradition is also observed in the shady world of PSYOPS where each secret mission of the Pentagon gets its patch. These patches offer a rare glimpse into the Pentagon’s secret operations and the symbolism on them is rather striking: ominous and cryptic phrases, dark occult symbolism, references to secret societies, and sometimes even a rather dark sense of humor.”

So when you’re making up your resume for that next job opportunity, don’t forget to add “sewed patches for secret government operations”.

What color are the sash and bonnet in this painting? Wrong.

“At the time this was painted, over 200 years ago, they would have been considered yellow. Colors aren’t as eternal as we imagine them to be. The way our cultures perceive colors changes over time, just like everything else.”

This is somewhat mind-bending.

“It’s really quite stunning the sense of entitlement the industry feels here, that it can simply put a massive tax on a form of memory that is rarely used for music. Though, if it passes, and musicians really want to make some money, they might be better off getting jobs at Best Buy and pushing people to buy SD cards.” —The Stupidity Of ‘You Must Be A Criminal’ Copyright Taxes: The SD Card Edition | Techdirt

“Have you ever learned more about an article or video by reading the comments people leave? Comments used to offer useful, supplementary information that you couldn’t get from the article or video itself. It was a way to learn more about a topic by listening to the different perspectives other people had. Today, the comments on most social websites limit people to two perspectives: ‘like’ or ‘dislike’. This limited view has changed the mentality and behavior of users, and the ‘thumbs up/like’ button is to blame.” —How the ‘Thumbs Up/Like’ Button is Dumbing Users Down - UX Movement

Mystery cable
I got this cable with some electronic purchase years ago, but never managed to figure out what it was. Sadly, this makes me feel like I’m losing my geek. Someone told me it was an HDMI cable, but that can’t be so.

My everlasting gratitude and affection to anyone who can tell me what the hell this is for.

Addendum: So, this is a DVI cable. And here was me thinking a DVI had only the one single thingie, like an RCA cable. (Yes, I am hip to the tech terminology, and have no fear of using such complex terms as ‘thingie’.)

A Complicated Kindness

It’s not often books make me laugh out loud, but the witty and frank style of Miriam Toews in “A Complicated Kindness” is very good and has drawn me in. My favourite quotation so far:

“Even a Menno [Mennonite] sheltered from the world knows not to stick her tongue into the mouth of a boy who owns an Air Supply record. You might stick your tongue into the mouth of a boy who owned some Emerson, Lake and Palmer, but you would not date him on a regular basis, or openly.”

Indoor caravan park offers camping experience with a twist  → metro.co.uk

While I am no fan of camping (and at this point I’m sure you’re asking yourself how I’m going to spend ten days camping on Kili if I don’t like camping), I do believe it should actually involve the outdoors. That aside, this is still a neat concept - the room within room. I like it. I wonder how the privacy issue will feel though. It’s no different than a hallway, but the manner of placement is psychologically different.
